Victoria College Hosts Texas Girls in STEM Day

Victoria College will celebrate Texas Girls in STEM Day by hosting a panel discussion of women who work in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields within the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Naval Criminal Instigative Service on Wednesday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. at VC’s Health Sciences Center.

Local high school students and the community are invited to hear the panelists discuss their STEM education and careers. Participants will be able to interact with the panelists, sign a commitment certificate recognizing them as a “STEM Explorer,” and enjoy refreshments, a selfie station, and giveaways.

Panelists include:

• Supervisory Special Agent Dana Shutt is a supervisor for the Charleston, SC Office with extensive experience in forensic science.
• Special Agent Bianca Beckman has been a Forensic Consultant for NCIS for many years
• Intelligence Specialist Angela Blanco has been a part of their intelligence team for several years and brings extensive experience and knowledge when it comes to naval intelligence.
• Special Agent Deanna Stevens with the FBI for 23 years and has gained invaluable experience and knowledge in her field.
• Staff Operations Specialist Danielle Haynes will share her experiences and explain the other roles and positions available at the FBI.

Texas recognizes Texas Girls in STEM Day each year on March 1. The day marks a chance to celebrate and encourage the participation of girls in Texas in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — and is the result of House Bill 3435, passed by Representative Rhetta Bowers during the 86th Regular Session. The legislation encourages all across the state to embrace programs, ceremonies, and class instruction that emphasize women in STEM-related careers.
