You've probably heard about scammers calling people claiming to be from the IRS or some other government agency in attempts to get them to pay money, usually via a prepaid card or money gram. While that ought to raise a red flag in and of itself, scammers are using an app that spoofs the caller's number making it appear to be from a legitimate source.

That's the case in Port Lavaca, where police have received a number of reports of residents receiving these calls asking for money. Police say if you receive such a call, do not send anyone any money, and do not give the caller any personal information. As a general rule, any official business from any government agency will be done via U.S. Mail.

If you do get one of these calls, you can call Port Lavaca Police at 361-552-3788 to report it.
