The National Institutes of Health recently studied the lengths at which COVID-19 can exist on surfaces.

According to a press release from the National Institutes of Health, COVID-19 can live on surfaces for several hours, and even days. Much like with it's predecessor SARS, scientists studied how the environment affects COVID-19 and found that both share similar stability.

Results from the study reveal that COVID-19 was detectable in:

  • Aerosols- up to 3 hours
  • Copper- up to 4 hours
  • Cardboard- up to 24 hours
  • Plastic- up to 2-3 days
  • Stainless Steel- up to 2-3 days

Based on this research you can quickly see why it is so important for us to all practice proper hand-washing techniques and only go out when it's absolutely necessary. The virus is very easily spread, and even if you personally do not fall ill, you could potentially pass it to someone else.

Scientists believe that one of the possible reasons that COVID-19 has spread so quickly, is due to the fact that most people are unaware that they are infected. The research has also found that a large portion of secondary cases are caused by community spread.

Again, in Layman's terms, wash your hands and stay home. If you have to go out, keep a safe social distance.
