Amory’s Top Five Things to Do in Victoria This Memorial Day
We’re all looking forward to our three day weekend but do you have any ideas for what you’re actually going to do?
No? Well, fortunately, JACK’s asked me to put together my top recommendations of activities and places to go on Memorial Day. Personally, I think he just did it to get me out of his hair but whatever…
Here, in no particular order, are my Top Five things to do on Memorial Day.
We’re big fans of the Texas Zoo here at JACK and we’re always up for a visit. JACK always tries to get the staff to put me in a cage, usually with the monkeys, when we’re there. He’s such a practical joker.
Every day this Memorial Day weekend, the Texas Zoo will have a Reptile show from 1 to 2PM. Grab the kids and head over to the Zoo where you can see the snakes up close and personal. JACK has suggested I ask to see the most poisonous ones so he can take pictures of me holding them while one of his girlfriends tries to scare the snake… I’m not sure how I feel about that.
While the weather has been a bit on the hot side, it’s been beautiful out and this weekend should be no exception. Why not get out for a few holes of golf?
The Riverside Golf Course offers 27 holes of golf that are intended to be played in three 18 hole combinations. The course is well maintained, offers shade with the nearby trees on each hole, and never fails to offer a challenge.
JACK has told me I’ll be caddying for him and some of his girlfriends this weekend but I’ll have to walk with the golf clubs because the ladies and the ice chests will be taking up all the room in the carts. He’s suggested hydrating and lots of sun screen so it’s obvious he’s concerned about my well being.
If you’re in the mood to stay cool, Splashway Family Waterpark is definitely the way to go.
Open from 10AM to 6PM this Memorial Day, Splashway offers a large variety of attractions that will help you cool off in the South Texas Heat. There’s the Wave Pool for lounging in the cool water on a float or for the more adventurous, Hurricane Hill offers the option of staying cool and getting a thrill.
JACK’s told me I’ll be the unofficial “Cabana Boy” for this trip. From what I understand, the job entails making sure all of his drinks have the proper alcohol content and keeping the little umbrellas on hand for them.
There was also mention of a large palm frond and fanning but I’m sure he was joking. I hope.
There’s also the option of going out to the lake this weekend which is a great way to enjoy food, fun, and the cool water with your friends and family.
You can camp there if you’re in the mood to rough it out in the wilds near the water. If you’re not in the “primitive” mood, there are also 52 multi-use campsites which include barbeque pits, picnic tables, and electrical hookups so you can camp in style.
With hiking trails, volleyball courts, boat ramps, and dedicated swimming areas, there is plenty to do on your long weekend at Coleto Creek Park and Reservoir.
JACK’s already told me that I’m invited to his shindig at the lake this weekend. When I asked what I could bring, he gave me a list. A long list. Like a really long list. I asked if he would be forking over any cash for the trip to the store and he laughed. And laughed. And laughed. It got uncomfortable how much he was laughing so I just went to the store.
If you’re more in the mood for a more “surf and sand” experience, Port Lavaca is a short drive away and offers several beaches for your Memorial Day outing.
Spend the day at the beach or take in the nearby sights. Sun, sand, and surf is a great way to spend any weekend and with Corpus Christi just up the road from Port Lavaca, there’s plenty to do all weekend long. Visit the Texas State Aquarium or check out the USS Lexington, or just spend the day soaking up the rays on the beach and swimming in the Gulf Coast.
Apparently I’m on jellyfish and ice patrol for JACK when we visit the beach. And apparently that duty includes tracking down and incapacitating jellyfish with my bare hands as well as making sure the ice chests are well iced.
I may have to make my own plans this weekend…
