Texas Teen Blows Off Both Hands During Fireworks Accident
Two teenagers in the San Antonio area are lucky to be alive after a terrible accident that took place over the weekend.
CBS Austin reports the teens were injured during a street racer event that took place in an area parking lot on Sunday evening. Many of the attendees at the event were lighting off fireworks in celebration of the New Year near the Eisenhauer Marketplace. Police say some of the racers were spinning donuts in the lot as they set off fireworks.
Around 10:30 PM one of the teens started to light off mortar shells. One teen held the mortar shell in his hand as another person tried to light the firework when it unexpectedly blew up as it was being held. The teenager completely lost both hands instantly. Another teenager who had a mortar thrown in their direction was hit by the explosion and lost the fingertips on at least one hand along with damage to his eyes which could result in a loss of vision. Both teens were immediately taken to Brooke Army Medical Center according to KENS5.com
I can't imagine what it must have been like to be in that parking lot when those mortars went off. No arrests ended up being made by San Antonio police at the time of the accident.
