ORIGINAL STORY (Reported Friday 6/19)

It's never the news we want to hear in the search for someone's child: skeletal remains have been found near the search area for missing 20-year-old Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen.

The Killeen Police Department started a K-9 search Friday morning (June 19) after they were alerted regarding a possible body located in a field.

According to local news outlet KTRK, officials made the announcement Friday morning and ordered an autopsy.

Guillen was reported missing April 22 after her car keys, barracks room key, ID and wallet were found in the armory room where she was working earlier in the day.

The family has started a White House petition, which has surpassed 144,000 signatures and a website for Vanessa's case.

The Killeen Police Department thanked the Ft. Hood Criminal Investigation Division, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance into the investigation that led to today's discovery.

The U.S. Army said they are aware of the news and have no "credible information" that it's related to the disappearance of Guillen. They also said they won't release any information until a positive identification is made and they notify next of kin.

The remains have not been positively identified as of Friday evening.

A second soldier was reported missing from Fort Hood last year. According to military officials, Pvt. Gregory Morales was last seen driving his 2018 black KIA Rio outside of the army base on Aug. 19, 2019.

A $25,000 reward has been offered for information on Morales' whereabouts.
