Remember that time Jake Gyllenhaal almost played Spider-Man? We may never get to see him in the Spidey suit, but we will get to see him in a flashy villain suit and maroon cape. Gyllenhaal will face off with Peter Parker in next summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home as Mysterio, and we finally have the first look at his villain.

Production for Jon Watts’ Spidey sequel is currently underway in Liberec, Czech Republic. One fan (via snapped some footage of a scene involving Mysterio and a ferris wheel. The photos and video aren’t the best quality, so it’s hard to tell if it’s actually Gyllenhaal on set or just his stunt double in costume. (It’s also worth noting that Gyllenhaal hasn’t officially been confirmed by the studio yet.) Either way, Gyllenhaal or stunt double, here’s the first look at the Mysterio costume:

Here’s a better look at the cape and his gold cuffs:

The costume isn’t as vivid and colorful as Mysterio’s is in the comics, which had him wearing a bright green suit and purple cape. But there’s one thing missing from those photos: his signature fishbowl helmet. As first noticed by Comic Book Movie, we may have gotten a look at that in another set photo that also potentially teased Spider-Man’s stealth suit. It looks like that fishbowl head is to the left of Spidey on the ferris wheel:

In the comics, Mysterio was originally a Hollywood stuntman and special effects wizard known as Quentin Beck who later became a supervillain. The character first debuted in 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man #13. Details about Far From Home are of course under wraps – I mean, technically (and spoiler alert for Infinity War if you somehow haven’t seen it yet) Tom Holland’s web-slinger is dead so uh, that needs to be fixed in Avengers 4 first.

By the looks of these set photos though, Spidey and Mysterio will either be recreating the famous ferris wheel scene from The Notebook, or less excitingly, have some kind of epic carnival duel. Hopefully we’ll get an official look at Gyllenhaal’s baddie soon, and an official casting confirmation from Marvel and Sony.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 5, 2019.
