They've been controversial since they were put into use and now, red light cameras at intersections on SH 35 in Port Lavaca will be shut down next week.

City Councilors voted to stop the camera program because there wasn't any money being generated from it. In a published report, Interim City Manager William DiLibero said that was likely due to the fact that any tickets that were issued as a result of the cameras were treated as civil penalties, and residents were ignoring the citations. Meanwhile, Mayor Jack Whitlow said he thought there wasn't any money generated because the program was successful.

Port Lavaca police will begin patrolling the highways intersections more often when the cameras are shut down January 29th.
