Nothing More Address Mass Shootings in Powerful ‘Let ‘Em Burn’ Video
Gun violence has been an increasing issue in America in recent years with 2018 sadly yielding a wealth of mass shootings. The hot button topic more often than not has centered on guns, but with their new video for "Let 'Em Burn," Nothing More turn the focus on a different angle not as widely addressed.
"Hundreds of people have been killed in mass shootings over the past several years. Almost everyone has chosen the red team or the blue team and we're stuck in this mode where we fight over political problems instead of human solutions," says the band. "More guns or less guns isn't the question. The real question is, why are we killing each other?"
The band teamed with director Ben Roberds of the Dominar Films production company to create the "Let 'Em Burn" video, which certainly provokes a reaction as a variety of everyday people find themselves not only behind the gun ready to pull the trigger but also the victims of shootings themselves.
"The 'villain and victim' narrative in media is so seared into our brains that we can't see straight," said vocalist Jonny Hawkins. "The media has become our God and we have become its bitch. We are blind to human solutions because our emotions have been glued to political problems, and it has paralyzed our progress. Most of us know that mental health is the cause of mass shootings, yet we are obsessed with talking about the symptoms and gridlocking ourselves in political battles without proper action. It's time to find solutions... it's time to focus on mental health."
In the period since the clip was shot in early October, the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting and the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks, Calif. have made headlines, while other less publicized shootings have occurred as well.
Nothing More, who have put the focus on mental health in the past, are shining the spotlight there once again, partnering with the mental health charity To Write Love on Her Arms. One dollar from each ticket on their upcoming tour will go to support the movement.
"the ɥʇnɹʇ tour" starts Feb. 21 in Phoenix, Ariz., with Of Mice & Men, Badflower and Palisades joining the run. The group is also partnering with HeadCount to encourage voter registration at the tour stops as well. See the dates below and get ticketing info here.
