The new X-Men movie trailer is scored with The Doors song “The End.” But maybe it won’t be. There are still a few X-Men movie projects in the pipeline, although their future is surely somewhat in doubt because of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. One of those projects is Gambit, the long-in-development solo movie for the X-Men’s most Cajun, most hilariously accented member. (And let me tell you, the prize for the most hilariously accented X-Men has a lot of competition, particularly in the old Chris Claremont comics.)

The guy who directed that new X-Men movie, Simon Kinberg, is doing press around the film, and he spoke about Gambit, which he’s also involved in as a producer. (Channing Tatum is attached to star as the title character.) Kinberg told IGN that the tone they’re going for with it is ... “romantic comedy.”

Look, I’m just telling you what he said:

You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.

Kingberg explained that the character of Gambit is “a hustler and a womanizer” with a “swagger” that lent itself to romantic comedy." I’ve read a lot of X-Men comics where Gambit’s behavior felt like the polar opposite of that, but what do I know?

Fox still has plans to make a Multiple Man movie, based on supporting X-Men character whose powers are pretty self-explanatory, and an X-Force movie featuring Deadpool and Cable. But, again, so much of that will be determined by what happens between Disney and Fox. We could see all these films. We could see them in a drastically different form than what Kinberg envisions. Or we might never see them at all. Gambit was supposed to open in theaters in June of 2019, and is now set for March 13, 2020. If this romantic comedy does emerge in the next couple years, it will depend on just how the meet cute between Disney and Fox goes.
