Officials at Texas A&M University in College Station are evacuating approximately 50,000 students off campus at this moment in response to a bomb threat that university and law enforcement officials are considering viable. A "Code Maroon" has been posted with instructions to all students at the campus on the university's emergency information site ( http://emergency.tamu.edu/ ).

According to the Austin American Statesman on line edition as of 12 noon, here is the univesity's official statement: "Tom Hughes, A&M;’s deputy director for news and information services, said officials are still trying to move the university’s 50,000 students off campus but that no other information is available.

He said he didn’t know how the threat was delivered, but said that university police felt it was viable enough to clear the campus.

“I wish I could give you more information but that’s all we know,” he said."

At 11:42 this morning, Texas A&M posted the following on their emergency site with other information:

The University has received a campus-wide bomb threat. We are asking all students, faculty, and staff to evacuate campus as quickly and as safely as possible by foot. Do not use a vehicle at this time. This evacuation is effective immediately until further notice.

Persons on main campus please proceed north to Church Street or South towards Anderson Street.
