Suspect in Austin’s Sunday Shooting Arrested in Manor, Texas
Austin Police have arrested the man suspected of killing three people in a Sunday afternoon shooting that took place near Arboretum shopping center.
KHOU reports that police arrested 41-year-old Stephen Broderick early this morning after receiving 9-1-1 calls about a man walking down Highway 290 near Manor, Texas. KVUE.com reports that Broderick was arrested without incident.
Stephen Broderick is a former sheriff's deputy. Police described Broderick as a suspect in the attack who remained at large on Sunday but was not considered a risk to the general public. The victims involved in the shooting are reported to be two females and one male who were shot in an apartment complex near the Arboretum according to KVUE's Tony Plohetski. First responders gave the victims emergency medical care on the scene but the victims all passed away from their injuries.
Police are now left trying to piece together evidence that might help to shed light on why Broderick opened fire on the individuals. Police records show Broderick was charged with a felony for sexual assault of a minor in 2020. He was released on bail last June but KHOU reports that the Travis County District Attorney announced they had plans to file a motion to revoke that bond. As of Sunday evening, police are still not sure about the weapon used in the shooting or where that firearm might be.
Police believe that Broderick knew the victims and targeted them with intent to do them harm. He was arrested around 7:30 am this morning. Police say Broderick was armed at the time of his arrest but can't confirm yet if the firearm found on the suspect is the same as the one used in the shooting.
