Sales of Amy Winehouse’s Albums Surge After Her Death

In the hours following Saturday’s death of British pop singer Amy Winehouse, sales of her albums surged — pushing her 2007 Grammy-winning album ‘Back to Black’ to the top of the iTunes charts in the US, UK, France, and Germany.

UK’s Official Charts company, which tracks downloads and disc sales, reports a 3700 percent increase in the sales of Winehouse’s albums. “We would expect an even bigger impact to roll through over the coming days,” said Official Charts managing director Martin Talbot.

The spike is similar to that seen after music legend Michael Jackson died. In the two years since his death, his estate is estimated to have generated at least $310 million from album sales and spin-offs.

Winehouse, 27, was found dead in her London home on Saturday. While she was a longtime substance-abuser, the cause of her death is still undetermined.
