Today is the day to celebrate women across the world. It's a global celebration in honor of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

It's International Women's Day.

This might surprise you but the original " Women's Day" was first celebrated well over a century ago, beginning in America in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding better pay, shorter hours, and voting rights.

International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations decades later in 1975. The theme for 2021 is #ChoosetoChallenge with the idea being that with challenge comes change.

"A challenged world is an alert world," the International Women's Day website says. "We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality."

Today is a day for me when I will remind my young daughters about the obstacles we have overcome as women. One of the ways I love to share in the success of women is to offer my girls some of the most inspirational quotes I've heard from women who are admired around the world for their achievements. Here are ten of the most meaningful to me.

LOOK: Milestones in women's history from the year you were born

Women have left marks on everything from entertainment and music to space exploration, athletics, and technology. Each passing year and new milestone makes it clear both how recent this history-making is in relation to the rest of the country, as well as how far we still need to go. The resulting timeline shows that women are constantly making history worthy of best-selling biographies and classroom textbooks; someone just needs to write about them.

Scroll through to find out when women in the U.S. and around the world won rights, the names of women who shattered the glass ceiling, and which country's women banded together to end a civil war.
