Mark Ruffalo has a reputation for having trouble with secrets. That’s a problem for an actor in Marvel movies, where protecting spoilers is practically part of the job description. Ruffalo even spoiled the end of Infinity War a year before the movie came out and was lucky enough that everyone thought he was joking. So perhaps this story is not that shocking.

During an interview for Avengers: Endgame, Ruffalo told Yahoo! that he was sure he was going to be one of the heroes to get snapped out of existence by Thanos in Infinity War. And in fact, he said, he did die in at least one version that was shot. His exact quote:

‘I didn’t know until I saw the movie. For one take, I did disappear, and then the other one I didn’t.’ That would mean that during filming even certain actors weren’t aware of their fates.

Not to question the validity of a statement from a genius of the likes of Bruce Banner, but ... how could this be accurate? Marvel filmed Infinity War and Endgame basically concurrently. And it’s pretty clear, just from the Endgame trailer, that Bruce Banner is alive and well in that movie. By the time Infinity War came out, he had to know he was in Endgame; he’d already shot a bunch (or all) of it. So just how elaborate a ruse did Ruffalo think the Russo brothers were playing with him just to make sure he didn’t spoil anything? Like, did he really think the Russos would go to the trouble to put him in every scene in the movie just so he couldn’t reveal that they bumped him off?

Then again, Ruffalo’s said some wild stuff before and it turned out to be true. So maybe he’s once again revealing something and we just don’t realize it yet. Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26.
