A massive water line break in El Paso turned into a mess over the weekend, leaving at least 38,000 people without water.

A major water break happened late Saturday night, around 10 p.m., in El Paso. While most people were winding down for the night, water started pouring into the streets and neighborhoods. Residents in the area quickly shared videos showing heavy flooding as crews rushed to figure out what went wrong.

Water break drains roughly 15 reservoirs.

According to EPWater, the break didn’t just knock out water for a few blocks, it hit around 38,000 customers across Northeast and Central El Paso. The damaged line fed multiple smaller lines, and when it failed, it triggered a domino effect that drained roughly 15 water reservoirs, turning a bad situation into a full-blown water crisis.

EPWater warned early on that getting water fully restored could take up to 36 hours, and repairs to the main line could stretch on for days. A boil water advisory was issued, and residents were asked to cut back on water use as much as possible.
"We understand how disruptive this outage is and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” said Gilbert Trejo, Vice President of Operations and Technical Services. “Restoring service and protecting public health are our top priorities. Our crews have been working around the clock and will continue 24/7 efforts until service is restored.”
To help people get through the outage, EPWater set up water distribution sites in the area. Anyone who knows an elderly or disabled person who needs water delivered can call 915-594-5500.
