NFL Players Want Jerry Jones Fined for Micah Parsons Contract Talks
Dallas Cowboys Owner/General Manager Jerry Jones has been very open about his contract discussions with his star defensive player Micah Parsons. Turns out, what Jerry Jones was doing was technically illegal.
It is now day 25 of the Jerry Jones/Micah Parsons contract standoff. It was back on August 1st that Micah requested to be traded away from the Dallas Cowboys. He's not the first player to do this during a contract negotiation. Obviously, Cowboys fans have been pretty upset with Jerry as to how he's handling this situation. Jerry has flat out said he worked a deal out with Micah himself and that his agent got in the way afterwards.
Jerry Jones Says 'No Room for Agent' in Contract Negotiations
Whether it has been speaking to Stephen A. Smith or Michael Irvin for interviews. Jerry has flat out said he had a contract done with Micah, then his agent got involved and blew it up. Turns out what Jerry is doing is technically illegal according to the most recent NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement.
NFL CBA on Contracts with Players
The most recent NFL CBA went into effect in March of 2020. You can read it in full, but Article 48 Section 2 clearly states:
Enforcement: Under procedures to be established by agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA, the Commissioner shall disapprove any NFL Player Contract(s)
between a player and a Club unless such player: (a) is represented in the negotiations withrespect to such NFL Player Contract(s) by an agent or representative duly certified by the NFLPA in accordance with the NFLPA agent regulation system and authorized to repre-sent him; or (b) acts on his own behalf in negotiating such NFL Player Contract(s).
Essentially, if a player has an agent, all contract discussion must be between management and the agent. A player and general manager can't agree to a contact without the agent in place. Basically Jerry Jones has openly admitted to breaking this rule and several players are sick of Jerry Jones facing no repercussions.
The talk this week is why the NFL is literally allowing Jerry Jones to openly break this rule and face no repercussions. Darrelle Revis released a statement saying a fine would be like pennies to Jerry Jones, but the league is just allowing it to go on.
What is the Fine for Breaking this Rule in the NFL CBA?
Darrell Revis isn't lying, it would be like pennies for Jerry Jones. $47,000 is what a first time offender would get for breaking this article in the CBA. The fine goes up 5% after every other offense if it happens again. We will wait and see if Jerry has to pay up for the way he has handled this contract.
