THROWBACK THURSDAY: Dick’s Food Store – A Victoria Tradition

It's been a little over a year since Dick's Food Store closed in Victoria. Every time I drive by the former Dick's location on Crestwood, it makes me sad. I used to go to Dick's Food Store multiple times a week because it was convenient. It's great to see Dairy Treet open for business again.

At one time in Victoria's history,  three Dick's Food Store locations stood:  Lone Tree, Moody Street (West End), and Crestwood Drive.  I have memories of going to all three locations as a kid. For many in the Victoria area, the Dick's Food Store name remains a true symbol of Victoria. Many individuals and generations of families have worked at Dick's Food Stores.

In fact, I started to work at Dick's West End on Moody Street when I was 18. I bagged groceries, swept the parking lot, and was then promoted to produce. My dad and grandpa also worked at Dick's Food Store in the produce section at the Crestwood locations.

The Final operating day at  Dick's was on May 31, 2025. Dick's Food Store was a family affair that was run by the Dick and Hyak families. We miss the convenience, ambiance, and friendly service that made them a Victoria favorite.  The Dick's locations on Moody St. and Lone Tree were both transformed into Dollar Generals. The Dollar General on Lone Tree still operates today.

As for the recently vacated Dick's Food Store, you can’t help but wonder if that will also become a Dollar General? It seems like the perfect set of circumstances.  We miss you, Dick's Food Store.
