Famous Hill Country Peaches Ready Now In Texas

It's the time of year that the Texas Hill Country provides us with tasty peaches. People drive all over the state to Fredericksburg to buy the locally grown delights.

Texas Real Food.com reports that Fredericksburg, Stonewall, and Gillespie County are the Heart of Texas Peach Growing. Some years have better harvests than others, but all signs show a great crop this year.

The Germans, who settled in the area in the late 1890s, discovered the climate was ideal for growing peaches. Although peach Trees were not native to Texas, that didn't stop them from planting them in the area, and we are so glad they did.

From mid-May to mid-July each year, the Hill Country comes alive with peach stands along the roads. People drive long distances to buy peaches. The people who have been buying them for years have their favorite growers they know by name and make the trek every year.

If you want a hands-on experience, some farms allow you to pick your baskets of peaches.

Fredericksburg is the top tourist attraction in Texas. The old downtown main street has gift shops, restaurants, bars, and wine-tasting shops, making the trip to get the peaches even better.

Most peach stands are on the outskirts of town, and many small stands line the highways. These stands offer fresh peaches, locally made jams, and jellies using the many crops produced in the Hill Country.
