Check the calendar; today is the day of bad luck. Friday the 13th has a rather unlucky vibe attached to it. Superstition amps up the number 13 as being particularly unlucky.

If you are superstitious, make sure to take extra precautions to dodge the ladders, hold the hand mirrors extra tight, and avoid those cracks in the sidewalk today.

Where Did Friday the 13th Originate?

There arent any hard facts about its origins. Although, the History Channel speculates it has religious connections. They explained, "The seating arrangement at the Last Supper is believed to have given rise to a longstanding Christian superstition that having 13 guests at a table was a bad omen—specifically, that it was courting death"-Yikes.

For many, Friday the 13th is a day to turn up. So go out get that Friday the 13th tattoo or booze it up at special events serving up particularly spooky drink specials.

Cue: Spooky Season

This year for me, Friday the 13th triggers the unofficial beginning of the spooky season. It's gloomy, it's unlucky, it's perfect, which gets me thinking about all the spooky things I've seen or heard or the past few years since I moved back to Texas.

Spooks with Pooks

Let's get it going with some spooky stories. These are first-hand accounts from myself, so don't get it twisted; ya girl has seen some things. First and foremost, let me say I am highly suspect and a skeptic of many paranormal and spooky things. Just about anything can be explained with logic. However, there have been a few things I can't explain away.

Haunted Dentist Office

A few years back, a big thunderstorm shut off about half of a town in the Crossroads. I just so happened to be visiting two friends at a dentist's office they worked at.

The power was out at the office, so it was closed to the public; however, they needed a skeleton staff to remain there to run minimal things until the electricity turned back on. So I stopped by to hang out and help kill time.

This particular dentist's office had a few games for kids, including one of those basketball games where you throw a small ball into a hoop, and it goes off when you score. After the ball is thrown, it just rolls back to the front of the game so you can continue throwing shots. However, all the games that needed electricity were off because of the partial power outage.

To continue, all three of us were standing at the receptionist's desk chatting. My back was turned to that basketball game, and the two friends were facing it. Then, suddenly, we heard a swoosh sound, like a ball going through a net. We immediately turned towards the game only to see something that would make us question our sanity.

Excuse Me?!

The game has no power, so all the lights and sound were off. However, when we turned around to see where the sound came from, we all seen one small basketball do something out of this world.

We caught the ball falling from mid-air back to the front of the game. Now, I'm not a physics major, but I am educated enough to know that a ball cannot just be lifted off a surface on its own.

I was speechless. The two girls who worked there were briefly spooked but shrugged it off. Then, they explained the office has a little boy named Palomo who comes around every so often. After that, I was done and never returned.
