Edinburg Football Player Suspended

The player from Edinburg who was ejected for hitting a referee has finally been punished. Edinburg, Senior Emmanuel Duron has been suspended from ALL activities, including football, for the remainder of the school year. His sports days are over in high school. The incident occurred during a game on December 3rd. Duron, a senior who played defensive line, was arrested for the hit, charged with a class A assault, a misdemeanor.

The punishment goes much further than Duron. Edinburg head coach, JJ Leija, and Edinburg High School athletic department were also placed on probation through the 2021-2022 school year. Duron was the District 31-6A Defensive Player of the Year last season, Duron also is the Bobcats' kicker and punter and is a star wrestler. His future was bright.

In a video that went viral and was picked up by ESPN within minutes of occurring. You see Duron running from the sideline area after the referee had announced the ejection, slamming into the official. As a result of the assault, the district removed Edinburg High School's football team from the playoffs.

Emmanual Duron made his first public comments yesterday. This was the first time he has spoken since his act of violence made national headlines. He offered his apology. “I’d like to say that I’m sorry for what happened to my coaches, my family, and to the UIL,” Duron said in a quote and story that was published by The Monitor in McAllen.

Eighteen-year-old Duron spoke during an executive committee hearing of the University Interscholastic League, which was conducted remotely via Zoom.
