Never mind the fact that they’re presently in the midst of their summer tour as we speak,

Crosby, Stills & Nash have already announced plans to officially document that same tour with a new live release which will be released on July 17.

Recorded earlier this summer, ‘CSN 2012’ will be the first live video release by the trio – David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills –  in two decades. Similar to last year’s Crosby-Nash live DVD, the new release will be released in DIY fashion via CSN Records on CD and DVD, with a Blu-ray release coming initially as a Best Buy exclusive.

In addition to the expected hits and album track rarities, ‘CSN 2012’ will also feature new music from the group, including ‘Radio,’ ‘Almost Gone’ and a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Girl From The North Country.’ The contents of the video release are rounded out by interviews with David, Graham and Stephen.

CSN remain politically conscious, as evidenced by ‘Almost Gone,’ written and sung by Nash, which focuses on Bradley Manning, the Army private who got caught up in the WikiLeaks controversy. Nash admits that fans can be split on the subject matter of certain songs, but he says that the meaning can sometimes be misinterpreted, as has been the case with ‘Almost Gone.’

“I’m not talking about his guilt or his innocence. I’m not talking about whether he’s a hero or a villain. I’m talking about him as a human being. And under our laws you’re not allowed to punish someone so severely before a trial.”

While a planned Rick Rubin-helmed covers release has been scuttled, Nash calls the concept “a great idea” which they’re continuing to pursue. In recent months, they’ve continued recording on their own, laying down material at Jackson Browne’s recording studio.

A little bit further down the road, Nash will be releasing his memoir, planned for publication in the fall of 2013. The book promises an insider perspective on Nash’s work with groups like the Hollies, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and in Nash’s words, “a ringside seat to the last 50-odd years of rock & roll.”
