One of the many highlights of last night’s three hour Bruce Springsteen show in Newark, N.J. was the singer’s impromptu tribute to the late Levon Helm. Springsteen and the E Street Band was joined by a full house at the Prudential Center in singing the the Band‘s ‘The Weight.’

Before beginning the song Springsteen explained how Helm influenced him, joking that when he auditioned drummer Max Weinberg that he made him sing. “He was one of the greatest, greatest voices in country, rockabilly and rock & roll,” the Boss said of Helm.

“Levon’s voice and drumming was so incredibly versatile. He had a feel on the drums … it comes out of a certain place in the past and you can’t replicate it.”

Springsteen, who also dug out the rare track ‘Bishop Danced‘ at the concert, finished up the first leg of the Wrecking Ball tour last night. The next leg begins on May 13 in Sevilla, Spain with almost three dozen shows across Eurpoe. The American tour will resume on Aug. 18 in Boston, Mass.
