Ben & Jerry’s to Honor Colin Kaepernick With New Flavor
You may be familiar with the permanent flavors offered by Ben & Jerry’s regarding Elton John, Jerry Garcia, and Ron Burgundy, Will Ferrell's character in Anchorman. Now former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is joining their ranks!
Ben & Jerry’s is honoring Kaepernick in his courageous work to confront systemic oppression and police violence against people of color by launching, “Change the Whirled.” Chris Rivard, global product development manager stated that “sometimes we create flavors for a need.”
The ice cream, “Change the Whirled,” is vegan, just like Kaepernick, and has a caramel sunflower butter base, along with fudge chips, and graham cracker, and chocolate cookie swirls.
Kaepernick says he’s “honored to partner with Ben & Jerry’s on Change the Whirled. Their commitment to challenging the anti-Black roots of policing the United States demonstrates a material concern for the well-being of Black and Brown communities,” and that “My hope is that this partnership will amplify calls to defund and abolish the police” and “to invest in futures that can make us safer, healthier, and truly free.” Kaepernick’s portion of proceeds made from sales of the new flavor will support his Know Your Rights camp, founded in 2016 to advance the well-being of Black and Brown communities.
Jay Curley, global head of marketing states, “This is a full-time flavor…delicious ice cream, with a joyful packaging that honors a man whose words and actions have love rooted in it. Do we expect this to change everyone’s mind? Of course not. But it can open up conversations and, to a degree, challenge people’s thinking and spread the actual message Colin is talking about and the work Know Your Rights Foundation is working on.”
You can expect to see flavors hit the freezers near you starting in 2021.
