Watch Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks Reunite for ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 40th anniversary tour rolled into London on July 9, with Stevie Nicks lending support as an opening act. Naturally, the occasion called for a live rendition of their hit 1981 duet, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”

The night’s performance, which you can watch via the fan-shot footage above, received a rave review from the BBC, whose Mark Savage described the crowd as “delighted” to see the duet and quoted Nicks as telling the audience that Petty is her “favorite rock star.”

Petty and Nicks’ Hyde Park duet wasn’t the first time this year that they’ve played “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” together in concert. They also shared a stage in February at the MusiCares Person of the Year event, at which Petty was the guest of honor, making time during a four-hour all-star performance to play “Draggin'” as well as their other duet from the era, “Insider.”

The Hyde Park show comes shortly after producer Jimmy Iovine, who was working with both artists in 1981, recalled that juggling act during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. Explaining that he attempted to keep his relationship with Nicks — which had become personal as well as professional — a secret from Petty, Iovine admitted he asked Nicks to hide in his basement when Petty visited his home. His position between the two artists ultimately led to Nicks covering “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” a song Petty had decided against including on his Hard Promises LP.

“I said if a woman sings an aggressive guy’s lyric, it can’t miss,” said Iovine. “You’ve got Stevie Nicks singing ‘Than make a meal of some bright-eyed kid / You need someone looking after you’ — a woman saying that to a man can’t miss.”

Petty and the Heartbreakers will remain on the road through early fall. Nicks, meanwhile, has a pair of Fleetwood Mac performances lined up at the Classic East and West festivals later this month, as well as a handful of solo dates scheduled through late September.
