Where were you when you first found out that Seth Rogen was making an animated movie about sex-crazed foodstuffs? I don’t think it’s too much of an exaggeration to say that this will be the kind of moment that defines a generation. Grizzled old men will sit around campfires and tell bright-eyed children wondrous stories about the Before Time, a time when animated movies were for children and food was just a thing you ate. The world is much different now.

Alright, that might be selling the film just a little too strong — our own review of the work in progress at SXSW this year was less than glowing — but there does seem to be an awful lot of curiosity surrounding Sausage Party. Those lucky enough to attend Comic-Con International 2016 this past week were treated to a panel discussion on the film led by producer and star Seth Rogen; those of us who stayed at home were treated to the brand new red band trailer above.

As reported by Variety, the panel discussed the origins of Sausage Party and some of the key advocates in getting a tricky film like this made. Rogen in particular felt that he could either be ahead of the curve when it comes to R-rated animation or left wishing he had been the one to do it.

The day after we knew we wanted to make a movie about food, we decided food had to f--- each other. We were like, ‘Someone is going to make an R-rated Pixar movie one day and I’m going to be pissed if we’re not the guys to do it.’

Variety also reported that Edward Norton of all people was a key advocate in getting the film made and convincing other cast members to sign on board. According to Rogen, Norton even went so far as to try to explain the premise to Birdman and The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu over dinner one night. If Rogen and his team are still searching for another project to get off the ground, I for one would recommend a My Dinner With Andre-style film that features Norton and Iñárritu discussing animated sausage sex.

The official synopsis of the film can be found here:

Sausage Party, the first R-rated CG animated movie, is about one sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store.

The film includes the vocal talent of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek. It will hit theaters on August 12, 2016.
