Planking. An “artistic” activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the internet is an integral part of the game. Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play. Now JACK has seen a variation of planking….from the contributions at his own Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/JACK987FM. But all in all, lying in a rigid, semi catatonic state seems to be generally accepted by most. In addition to that, JACK has never seen an official rule book addressing the game of planking, so JACK is thinking it’s pretty flexible (so to speak) to participate in “planking.”

Supposedly “planking” was invented in 1997 in North East England. Comedian Tom Green claims he invented as early as 1994. But considering how far south Tom Green’s career has gone, he would probably take credit for inventing water. Who even remembers Tom Green? Sorry, JACK digresses.

South Korea calls it ”playing dead”. France calls it “a plat ventre” (on one’s belly), Australia calls it “extreme lying down”. And Ireland calls it “facedowns”. It has now transformed worldwide in to “planking”. Whatever you call it, it seems to be in Victoria for its 14 days of fame. It’s nice for a fad to hit Victoria, albeit late, but at least it hit and will mostly like move towards Tivoli and shake that town up for an hour or so.

Planking knows no age. So if you want to say you participated in a fad other than texting while driving, now is your chance to do so. Take a look at JACK’s Facebook page, get a few ideas and then submit your entry photograph to planking4jack@aol.com.

Just remember, be smart and be safe. JACK won’t accept any contributed photo that looks life threatening.
