The City of Port Lavaca is discontinuing the use of red light cameras this week and as of the end of last year, a reported $1,353,283 in fines remain unpaid.

Officials say nearly 38,000 tickets were generated from use of the cameras, and the majority have not been paid. The cameras went into use 9 years ago and did generate profit for the city at first. In a published report, officials say the vast majority of unpaid tickets are seriously overdue. Any money generated from the system ultimately went to pay for the use of it, and did not profit the city.
