When Disney acquired Lucasfilm and the rights to distribute Indiana Jones, rumors began circulating about the studios’ intentions to reboot the franchise and cast a younger actor in Harrison Ford’s iconic role. That’s not the case, however, as Ford is reuniting with Steven Spielberg for Indiana Jones 5, while recent comments from studio chief Bob Iger suggested that there are still plans to reboot Indy sometime in the near future. As it turns out, those plans may be a bit bigger than Iger implied.

Over the weekend, ILM president Lynwen Brennan participated in the Lucasfilm: The Art of Storytelling panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe. As /Film reports, Brennan dropped a quick bit of info about Indiana Jones while discussing Lucasfilm’s longterm plans for Star Wars:

Kiri [Hart] and her group have mapped out a story and timeline across multiple platforms many years in advance, many EXHAUSTING years in advance. … We have a great honor to have responsibility for, so we want to be really careful with that. Not only for Star Wars but with Indiana Jones, which we’re all really excited about as well.

It’s possible that Brennan was speaking in general terms about Lucasfilm’s overall responsibility to maintain the integrity of both franchises, but Iger did tell THR last month that Indiana Jones 5 isn’t the only new Indy film the studios have planned. To be fair, Iger also said that he wouldn’t necessarily compare Indy to what they’re doing with Star Wars:

Not like Star Wars, but we hope… right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot — a reboot. I don’t know. We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off.

Whatever the case, it’s obvious that Disney and Lucasfilm intend to expand the Indiana Jones universe in some way, and they’ve likely already mapped out a tentative plan for the franchise beyond the new sequel. Now it’s just a matter of when they’ll share it with the fans.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2019.
