Gifford’s football career started the University of Southern California where he became an All American playing defense and offense.  Gifford was drafted by the New York Giants in 1952 and played offense and defense before settling on being halfback and wide receiver.  He went on to play in 8 Pro Bowls and was named to 4 first team All Pro teams.  UPI named him MVP of the NFL in 1956.  Gifford retired from the Giants in 1960, but came out of retirement in 1962 and played two more years with Giants.

Frank Gifford became a even bigger star when he stepped into the broadcast booth with Howard Cosell  and Don Meredith when those three began calling games for ABC’s Monday Night Football.

In 1977 Gifford was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Frank Gifford is survived by his wife, Kathy Lee, a host on the “Today Show” and 5 children.
