The Foo Fighters are planning to take some time off before recording a new album. Dave Grohl shared the news during an interview with Billboard to commemorate the band’s ranking as the number one act in the Alternative Songs chart’s 30-year history.

In the interview, Grohl tries to wrap his head around the Foo Fighters’ success, “It’s a challenge, you know? You kind of set these goals for yourself, to see if you can do it again, even when you’re crawling to the finish line you know that it’s there.” He then shares, “So here we are at the last set of shows we’ve been on for a year and a half and I’m ready to take a break, but I’m ready to do it again at some point.”

He continued, “When we start making records it’s almost like I don’t hear the song as much as I can see them, in my head. So I don’t read music, I see music in kind of shapes and patterns, so I can see the next record, I know that there is another one there, I don’t know when but I think I know what we should do.”

Grohl concludes, “We’ve been lucky, we’ve had this lightning rod that we’ve followed for fucking 24 years, or whatever and it takes us where we think we should go.”

The band only has four more shows on the schedule for 2018. See all their remaining dates here.

In other news, Dave Grohl and friends will debut his 23-minute solo track “Play” live at Warren Haynes' annual Christmas Jam. Grohl plays every instrument on the instrumental track and said, “The idea of coming in and not only recording a song by myself, but a 23-minute long instrumental – multiple instruments, running from one to the next – just seemed like something I’ve never done before,” he says. “And honestly, I didn’t know if I could pull it off.”

Christmas Jam takes place on Dec. 7 and 8 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C., and Grohl will headline the second night with the "friends" remaining a secret. The two-night event will feature performances from Gov’t Mule, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Grace Potter and many more. All proceeds from Christmas Jam will go to the Asheville area Habitat for Humanity.
