With the long July 4th weekend coming up, you might be wondering what you can do to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful (and very hot) weather we've been having lately. We've come up with a list of our top five suggestions for outdoor activities whether it's for this coming weekend or any other weekend in the summer ahead.

    Miniature Golf

Place to go: Putt Putt Golf

Sometimes, it's not feasible to play a full round of golf. Or maybe you've got small kids to entertain. Whatever the reason may be, Putt Putt is a great way to get out of the house and enjoy some sun while spending some time with loved ones... plus, you can rub it in their faces when you finish under Par. Don't worry about hurting the feelings of those toddlers, either. You know they'd do the same to you if they had the chance.

    Golfing

Place to go: Riverside Golf Course

Maybe you'd prefer a full "course" of golf or you just don't want to take the chance that the toddlers might win. If either is the case, the Riverside Golf Course is a great place to get in a round or two of golf. The greens are well-maintained, the staff is friendly, and the likelihood of a toddler being there to mock your swing are pretty low.

    Swimming

Place to go: Coleto Creek Reservoir

With the South Texas summer in full swing, perhaps you'd prefer something a bit more aquatic and cooling. Along with the swimming opportunities the Coleto Creek Reservoir presents, there's other activities to be had. Hiking, fishing, camping... for outdoor fun and games, it's hard to beat a place like the Reservoir and all it offers.

    Grilling/Barbecuing

Place to go: Your own backyard, Riverside Park, Coleto Creek Reservoir

In my family, it's a summer tradition to grill as often as possible. If your family doesn't have the same tradition, I'll refrain from calling them heathens but perhaps you should get that particular tradition going before someone else doesn't show the same restraint as me. Nothing beats a good barbecue for spending time with family and friends and if you get good at it, you won't even have to spend the money to buy the meat since you'll be in high demand year round. Bonus, if you get *really* good at it, you can become a BBQ snob and mock other people's meager skills at the grill. If you're concerned about not having the space, it's okay. At least two of our previous choices for this list (Coleto Creek Reservoir and the Riverside Park) have grills that are available to the public.

    The Texas Zoo

Place to go: ...The Texas Zoo, of course

The Texas Zoo is always having an event. Literally. And there's something for all ages. Bring the kids, your wife, your mother-in-law (maybe you can convince the Zoo she's an escaped monkey) and you're sure to find something to please the whole gang (except maybe your mother-in-law)
